Judgement Day For Tonye Cole As Supreme Court Commences Hearing On Rivers APC Primaries

The Supreme Court has commenced the hearing of the three appeals filed by the two factions of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State.

The two Rivers APC factions are led by Ibrahim Umah and Ojukaye Flag-Amachree.

The Supreme Court had recently ruled against a stay of execution judgment by the Court of Appeal barring the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognising APC candidates seeking to contest election in Rivers State.

The factions had filed appeals against the Supreme Court ruling.

Tonye Cole had been expectng INEC to officially recognise him as the APC governorship candidate after the ruling, evidenced by how his supporters went into wild jubilation scenes right from the court premises, however, the commission refused to change its position that the party had no candidates in the state.

At the proceeding on Monday in Abuja, the court heard arguments on the ruling of the Appeal Court, which ordered a stay of execution of the judgment by Justice Chiwendu Nwogu.

After listening to the arguments of the factions, the Supreme Court proceeded on a short recess.

It is expected that a ruling would be made on the appeals afterwards.
